Mahatma Gandhi The Father of Nation

Born on 2nd of October 1869, Gandhiji obtained his education in India and England where he was called to the bar in 1891. A deeply pious, truthful and sincere person, Gandhiji devoted every moment of his life to the service of mankind, especially the weaker sections of the society. From Cape Town to Calcutta, for well over five decades, Gandhiji launched his epic struggle against the evil forces of apartheid, casteism, communalsim and imperialism. He worked ceaselessly for the upliftment of villages , Harijan welfare, communal harmony and social justice. All his movements were based on non-violence, truth and love. He inspired the entire nation to achieve independence from the British rule through non-violence and non-cooperation.
Gandhiji had a special relationship with Jamia Millia Islamia. He never forgot that the founders of Jamia were nationalist leaders and freedom fighters who responded to his call for boycotting the government-run institutions. During its initial phase, Jamia faced acute financial problems and there were suggestions to close the institution altogether. At this crucial juncture, Gandhiji rose to its rescue and helped to raise funds for Jamia. He insisted that Jamia should retain its full name and character, integrating secular and moral values in its education.
