MAHATMA GANDHI

MAHATMA GANDHI-DOERENKAMP CENTER FOR ALTERNATIVES TO USE OF ANIMALS IN LIFE SCIENCE EDUCATION & GANDHI-GRUBER-DOERENKAMP CHAIR FOR ALTERNATIVES IN BIOMEDICL EDUCATION

The first ever National Center in Asia, for alternatives to animals in Life Sciences and Biomedical Science, has been started at Bharathidasan University, named in honor of Mahatma Gandhiji, who stood for Ahimsa and opposed to vivisection, and Ms. Doerenkamp, Founder of DOERENKAMP-ZBINDEN Foundation (Switzerland,http://www.doerenkamp.ch/en/index.html?id=10) who has been benevolent enough to bear the entire financial commitment to establish the center initially to the minimal working capacity, as "Mahatma Gandhi-Doerenkamp Center for Alternatives to Use of Animals in Life Science Education", which also has "Gandhi-Gruber-Doerenkamp Chair for Alternatives in Biomedical Education". This center is a joint venture of Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli, DZ Foundation, Switzerland, and People for Animals, Chennai. The references to the center are
i. to establish a repository of resources as alternatives already available
ii. to generate newer resources, and
iii. to offer training to teachers and learners in the alternatives.

The approaches will cover dissections through animation / virtual dissections, in vtro test systems for pharmacology and toxicology and in silico approaches for toxicology and pharmacology.

The center was launched on July 15, 2009, with Dr. M. Ponnavaikko (on the right), Vice-Chancellor, as the Governing Board Chairman and Dr. M. A. Akbarsha (on the left) , Professor of Eminence, as the Director. The center is due to be inaugurated on October 2nd, 2009, the 140th birthday of Mahatma Gandhi.
